Service Area of Chapter
Delta Gamma serves the teachers of Sabine, San Augustine, and Shelby counties in the Piney Woods of East Texas. This area is located near Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn Reservoirs and boasts unspoiled waterways for fishing and recreation. As an added bonus, our deep East Texas woods are a bird watcher's paradise!
These three counties are historically significant because of their proximity to the El Camino Real or Kings Highway. The El Camino Real has its easternmost beginning in Natchitoches, Louisiana and runs from the Piney Woods through rolling hills to the arid lands of Old Mexico. The Spaniards and the French that marked the trail were followed by such men as Moses Austin and his son Stephen Fuller Austin (The Father of Texas), Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and early missionaries of multiple faiths. Early pioneers came into Texas on this route and settled in the three counties long before Texas was a Republic, much less a State. In the late 1800s the railroad came through the counties linking the area with Houston.
The school districts that presently have membership in Delta Gamma are Center, Hemphill, Joaquin, San Augustine, Tenaha and Timpson.
