An International Society
The origins of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International are rooted in vision, courage, and a determination to elevate the role of women in education. On May 11, 1929, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a trailblazing educator and the first woman elected as Texas State Superintendent of Public Instruction, gathered 11 distinguished women at the Faculty Women’s Club in Austin, Texas. Together, they founded what was first called "Kappa Gamma Delta", soon renamed "Delta Kappa Gamma". This pioneering act was more than the creation of an organization. It was a declaration that women educators deserved equal recognition, professional dignity, and leadership opportunities.
While originally founded at a time when professional opportunities for women were limited, DKG has since grown into an international organization with over 46,000 members in 17 different countries around the globe. DKG remains dedicated to promoting excellence in education, and fostering the professional and personal development of key women educators worldwide.
